Foundation Years

Bakioğlu Holding’s story begins when Bak Ambalaj, the first group company founded by the late Enver Bakioğlu, started to operate in Izmir’s Kahramanlar district in 1973, with the production of printed and unprinted paper bags. Bak Ambalaj leveraged its enhanced machinery park in 1976, expanding its product range to flexo-printed and unprinted coils of food, detergent and garment packaging from polyethylene. In 1980, the Company invested in a rotogravure printing machine in accordance with the changing packaging requirements of our developing country, and introduced the production of high quality printed packaging from micron scale plastic film. Specializing in the packaging industry and gradually growing its business volume, Bak Ambalaj was relocated to its modern facilities in the Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone in Çiğli, Izmir in 1990. Closely following changing consumer preferences and technology, Bak Ambalaj added new investments to its facilities every year, and began to export 25% of its production with accelerating momentum in 1998, as well as acquiring the bread packaging facility in the same year. Still one of Turkey’s Top 500 Industrial Enterprises, Bak Ambalaj operates 4 different facilities in Izmir Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone, and is a key contributor to the export volume of our country by exporting over than 70% of its production, primarily to Western European countries.

Transition to Vertical Integration

A further step in the vertical integration of the packaging sector was completed with the 1993 foundation of Polibak Plastik Film AŞ., which specialized in plastic film production, one of the basic inputs of flexible packaging. Polibak, listed among Turkey's Top 500 Industrial Enterprises, has been producing BOPP films since 1994 in facilities built on a 150.000 m2 site in Izmir Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone. Polibak, which has adopted the concepts of innovation and continuous improvement as its principle, continually incorporates new technologies into its structure. The BOPP machine park consists of modern extrusion lines and shredding, as well as metalized units, boosting the existing production capacity with every new BOPP line added.

Founding of Service Companies

In 1994, Baksaş Sigorta ve Aracılık Hizmetleri AŞ joined the group to meet the insurance needs of the growing number of Holding companies, and also to provide services to external companies.

In order to contribute to the economic and social life of the Aegean region by establishing a bridge with Ankara, the regional broadcasting company Egevizyon Görsel ve İşitsel Medya Yayınları AŞ (Ege TV and Radyo Ege) was founded in 1994, and the Holding companies entered the media sector.

Established in 1995 to make turnkey factory constructions, Bakiş Yapı İnşaat Sanayi Ticaret AŞ also serves in the construction of Holding Companies and factories, as well as factories, schools and hospitals for different sectors.

In 1995, Baktrans Taşımacılık Ticaret AŞ was established to transport Bakioğlu Holding companies’ export-oriented production, and to provide logistics services to external companies. Considering the need for effective time-management in accordance with the conditions of the time, and the new order created by the globalizing world, Baktrans introduced helicopter transport and expanded the scope of services to include VIP transport, tourist attractions, air taxis, patient transport, photography and video shoots.

In light of the awareness that the only way to closely follow rapidly changing technology is communication, Baknet, which staked its position in the information sector under the trade name Baknet İletişim ve Bilgisayar Ürünleri Pazarlama Sanayi AŞ in 2000, began to provide services for Baknet Bilişim and Baknet VIP Havacılık under the name of Baknet Bilgi İşlem ve Taşımacılık AŞ as a result of the Baktrans merger as of December 2016.

Having continued its development as Bakioğlu Group of Companies, and consolidated its presence in the flexible packaging sector through its vertical integration structure, the Group took its first step towards institutionalization in 1996 with the establishment of Bakioğlu Holding.

Final Links of Vertical Integration

Providing pre-press gravure processing services Bak Gravür Teknolojisi Sanayi Ticaret AŞ, launched its operations initially as part of the Bakioğlu-Wetzel partnership in 1998. As of 2001, it continued its operations under Bakioğlu Holding as Enternasyonel Gravür AŞ. In 2017, the company changed its title to Bak Gravür Teknolojisi San. Tic. AŞ in order to ensure integrity under the roof of a single logo family with Group Companies and, currently, is among the leading rotogravure cylinder manufacturers in Turkey.

The final link of the vertical integration established by Bakioğlu Holding in the “Flexible Packaging Industry”, Bareks Plastik AŞ, was established in 2002, and multi-layered technological Polyethylene Film production was deployed. Listed among the Top 1000 Export Companies of Turkey, Bareks produces multi-layer polyethylene film, exclusively designed for printing and lamination and suitable for food packaging, and boasts a production capacity of 45.000 tons. Exporting at a rate of over than 80% to more than 30 countries as an industry leader, Bareks’ investments in the Izmir Free Trade Zone in line with its growth strategy and objectives are considered an important milestone.

In parallel with all these developments, Bak Ambalaj Dış Ticaret AŞ (Bak International) started to operate as of February 2015 to support the Group’s growing export operations.

International Structuring and Recent Developments

Shortly thereafter, in May 2015, Amsterdam-based company Bak Flexibles BV started operations in order to be closer to our customers in the targeted Western Europe market, to strengthen our international brand identity, and to support Bak Ambalaj’s sales in the region in terms of both sales force and logistics. The second overseas-based (Amsterdam-based) company included in the Group, Bak Global Trade BV (It’s renamed as P&B; Flexibles), kicked off operations towards the end of 2016 in order to benefit from cost-effective financing facilities in Europe in the process of overseas raw material procurement. 2017 marks the first step into the dry food industry with Freshbak, a 100% Bakioğlu Holding subsidiary. Achieving a first in Turkey, Freshbak operates by investing in Freeze Dry, a technology unparalleled on industrial terms. The brand architecture of Bakioğlu Holding and Group Companies was renewed and new corporate identity efforts were undertaken in 2018.

Adding value to the country by achieving “the best” in all activity fields thanks to continuous investment and development, guiding its activities with the mission of being an "everlasting” respected group of companies globally, developing an integrated "Packaging Industry" from scratch from 1973 to the present day and making it compatible with international standards, Bakioğlu Holding takes great pride in bringing this success to the Turkish Packaging Sector in a globally-competitive environment.
